Located in the Pamir mountain range of western China (Xinjiang), Mustagata is a popular destination for high altitude climbing and skiing.

Mustagata is a safe, straightforward himalayan peak, where almost no technical skills are required. It is an ideal climb for those wishing to test their ability at altitude and get a feel for Himalayan climbing. Mustagata is also a great primer if your goal is doing an 8,000 meter mountain such as Cho-Oyu.

For skiers or Snow boarders, Mustagata offers over 8,000 vertical feet (2,500 meters) of untracked snow from summit to snow line. The entire route can be “skinned” up without having to take off your skis once (except for when you’re sleeping in your tent, of course).

About Mustagata
Mustagata lays along the fabled Silk Road near the ancient city of Kashgar, just north of the Himalayan and K2, the second highest mountain in the world. Known as "Father of the ice mountains", Mustagata's glaciers nourish the vast alpine meadows where Kirghiz and Tashik herders graze their camels, sheep, and yak. The first climber captivated by Mustagata's stately form was the famous British explorer, Eric Shipton, who in 1947 turned back just short of the summit, not realizing how close he had come. Mustagata was first successfully climbed in 1956 by a Sino-Soviet team.

A note about safety in the region. Mustagata lies entirely within China and is not affected by the conflicts in Afghanistan or Pakistan. Although Mustagata is in the same general geographic region, it is divided by large mountain ranges from the areas of unrest and feels worlds apart. You can fly or take the train to Mustagata from Beijing, China's capital.
